Is Your Spa Boy Reading Incorrectly?
If you have a 2020 or newer Arctic Custom Series spa, Premier Pool & Spa can help diagnose and calibrate your Spa Boy system. Both the pH and ORP readings can be calibrated.
If your spa is online, the easiest option is to bring a fresh water sample into Premier Pool & Spa.
We can test the water, log into your spa through the Arctic Spas online system, compare the actual water chemistry with the Spa Boy readings, and make appropriate pH and/or ORP calibration adjustments while you are in the store.
You do not need to be home or standing next to the spa. If your spa is not online, we can assist you in calibrating your spa manually through the topside control.
Before Assuming Your Spa Boy Probe Has Failed
An unusual Spa Boy reading does not automatically mean that the probe needs to be replaced. Water chemistry, salt level, the Spa Boy salt cell, or communication issues can produce symptoms that appear to be a bad probe.
Work through the following items before scheduling a service call or requesting replacement of a Spa Boy probe.
Confirm the Spa Boy Salt Level
Verify that the spa's salt level is approximately 2200–2500 ppm. An incorrect salt level can affect sanitizer production and Spa Boy operation.
Get an Accurate Water Test
Before diagnosing Spa Boy, confirm the actual water chemistry with a reliable test. For the most accurate comparison, bring a fresh sample to Premier Pool & Spa or use a quality reagent-style test at home.
Don't Diagnose Spa Boy From One Test Strip
If a test strip appears to show little or no sanitizer, that alone does not necessarily mean Spa Boy has failed. Confirm the reading using a more accurate test before replacing parts or scheduling service.
Restart the Spa
Power-cycle the spa by turning the spa breaker completely off and then back on. If appropriate, the spa can also be restarted through its online controls.
Inspect and Clean the Spa Boy Salt Cell
Make sure the Spa Boy salt cell is clean and in usable condition. A dirty or aging salt cell can affect sanitizer production even when the Spa Boy probe itself is functioning correctly.
Compare Spa Boy With the Actual Water Test
Once the water chemistry and system have been checked, compare the current Spa Boy pH and ORP readings with the confirmed condition of the spa water.
Calibrate the Probe if Necessary
If the system is operating normally but the Spa Boy readings remain meaningfully different from the confirmed water condition, the pH and/or ORP readings may need to be calibrated.

What Does Spa Boy Calibration Actually Do?
The Spa Boy probe monitors the spa's pH and ORP. Calibration adjusts how the system interprets the probe signal so that its displayed reading more closely reflects the confirmed condition of the water.
pH Calibration
pH measures how acidic or basic the spa water is. If a reliable water test consistently shows a different pH than Spa Boy, the pH reading can be calibrated.
Accurate water test: 7.4 pH
Spa Boy reading: 7.8 pH
If the independent test is accurate and the difference remains consistent, a pH calibration adjustment of -.4 from current calibration may be appropriate.
ORP Calibration
ORP stands for Oxidation-Reduction Potential. It is measured in millivolts (mV) and is used by Spa Boy to evaluate the sanitizing activity of the water.
The ORP reading can also be calibrated when appropriate. Because ORP can be affected by several water-chemistry conditions, it is important to evaluate the actual water before making an adjustment.
ORP Is Not the Same as Chlorine PPM
A manual chlorine test normally reports sanitizer in parts per million (ppm). Spa Boy's ORP reading is reported in millivolts (mV).
They are related to the sanitizing condition of the water, but they are not the same measurement and the two numbers should not simply be made to numerically match. To calibrate ORP, Spa Boy should be compared against an accurate ORP reading from a separate meter.
Accurate ORP reading: 650 mV (Possibly derived from Free/Total Chlorine ppm)
Spa Boy reading: 550 mV
If the independent reading is accurate and the difference remains consistent, an ORP calibration adjustment of +100 from current calibration may be appropriate in this example.
The ORP calibration can be adjusted by up to 200 mV up or down. If Spa Boy's ORP reading is off by more than that, calibration alone cannot correct it, and further diagnosis may be needed.
When Should You Check Spa Boy Calibration?
- The Spa Boy pH consistently disagrees with accurate manual testing.
- The Spa Boy ORP reading appears inconsistent with the actual water condition.
- A Spa Boy probe has recently been replaced.
- Readings suddenly change significantly from their normal range.
- You have confirmed the salt level and water chemistry are correct.
- The Spa Boy salt cell has been inspected and is functioning properly.
- You have restarted the spa and the reading remains incorrect.
Minor differences between different testing methods can be normal. Calibration is most useful when there is a consistent and meaningful difference.
For the Most Accurate Calibration
- Take a fresh water sample directly from the spa.
- Test the water accurately.
- Check the current Spa Boy pH and ORP readings at approximately the same time.
- Compare the confirmed water condition with Spa Boy.
- Make a calibration adjustment only when appropriate.

Still Getting Incorrect Spa Boy Readings?
If you have confirmed the salt level, accurately tested the water, restarted the spa, checked the Spa Boy salt cell, and calibrated the probe but the readings are still incorrect, further diagnosis may be necessary.
If a Spa Boy probe is being considered for warranty replacement, completing these diagnostic steps first is particularly important. Additional testing may be required to determine whether the probe itself has failed or whether another condition is causing the incorrect readings.
