Types of Filters that need to be Backwashed:
Sand Filter, D.E Grid Filter, D.E. Quad Filter (Note: Quad D.E filters look similar to Cartridge but Are Not Cartridge Filters)
Why do We Backwash Filters?
Over time, as water continues to pass in just one direction, the filter medium will become clogged, reducing your filter’s effectiveness. When you backwash a pool, you send water backward through the filter, and out the waste or drain port. This forces all the debris caught in the filter to dislodge so you can easily remove it and restore the filter’s normal functioning level.
When & How do I Backwash?
You should backwash your sand or D.E. filter whenever the PSI reading on your pressure gauge is 10 PSI above the clean filter PSI. If you are unsure of what that number is, backwash the sand filter and note the pressure gauges PSI reading, that number is your clean filter pressure.
- Attach the backwash hose to the waste or backwash port, then turn the pump off.
- Turn the multiport valve to Backwash followed by Turning the pump back on.
- Let the water run out of the backwash port and through the backwash hose for 3-5 minutes, or until the water runs clear. Once the water is clear, turn the pump off.
- Turn the multiport valve to Rinse and turn the pump back on.
- Rinse the filter for about 30 seconds and turn the pump off.
- Turn the multiport valve to Filter, and turn the pump on, resuming the filtration normally.
Make sure to take note of the pressure on your pressure gauge after your backwash. The PSI that is displayed will be your base clean filter pressure. Once the gauge reads 10 PSI above that base, it's time to backwash again. We have replacement pressure gauges available that have adjustable indicators to mark your clean and dirty pressures if you would like the pressure gauge to remember those for you.
