🧽 How to Clean Cartridge Filters on Your Pool
A Step-by-Step Guide from Premier Pool & Spa
Keeping your pool water crystal clear starts with clean, efficient filtration. At Premier Pool & Spa, we recommend regular cleaning of your cartridge filters to protect your equipment, extend filter life, and ensure a sparkling pool all season long.
💡 Why Clean Your Cartridge Filter?
Cartridge filters trap dirt, debris, and fine particles—but when they clog, your system struggles.
You may notice:
-
⚠️ Reduced water circulation
-
⚠️ Cloudy water
-
⚠️ Higher pressure readings
-
⚠️ Extra strain on your pump
🧼 Cleaning your filter regularly (every 4–6 weeks) keeps things running smoothly and protects your investment.
🔍 Signs It’s Time to Clean
-
Pressure Gauge:
If your PSI is 10 or more above the normal baseline, it’s time to clean. -
Low Water Flow:
Weak return flow from your pool jets may indicate a clog.
🛠 Step-by-Step Cartridge Filter Cleaning
1. Turn Off the Pump
Always power down the system completely before starting maintenance.
2. Shut Valves
Close any valves to isolate the filter from the pool plumbing.
3. Open the Air-Relief Valve
This releases built-up pressure in the filter housing—typically located on top.
4. Disassemble the Filter
Undo the clamp or locking band holding the filter together.
5. Remove the Filter Lid
Carefully lift off the top of the filter housing to access the cartridges.
6. Remove & Inspect Cartridges
Look for:
-
Cracked end caps
-
Torn pleats
-
Deformations

7. Clean the Cartridges
-
Light Debris: Spray with a garden hose at a 45° angle between pleats.
-
Heavy Debris/Oil: Soak overnight in a filter cleaner solution.
Use a 5-gallon bucket or clean trash can to fully submerge the cartridge.
⛔ Do not use a pressure washer—it can damage the pleats.
8. Inspect & Lubricate the O-Ring
Check the tank O-ring. If intact, apply Magic Lube. Replace if cracked or worn.
9. Reassemble the Filter
-
Insert cleaned cartridges
-
Align and secure the lid
-
Tighten the clamp—use a rubber mallet if needed for even sealing
10. Restart System & Bleed Air
Turn on the pump with the air-relief valve open. Once water flows steadily, close the valve.
11. Check System Pressure
Confirm PSI returns to your clean-pressure baseline. If not, recheck for misalignment or sealing issues.
