🛠 How to Perform a Sand Change on Your Pool Filter

⚠️ Important:
Premier Pool & Spa is not responsible for any damage resulting from an incorrectly performed sand change. Always refer to your filter’s user manual for model-specific instructions and specifications.

⏳ How Often Should Sand Be Replaced?

Pool filter sand typically lasts 3–5 years, depending on pool usage, water chemistry, and maintenance. Over time:

  • Sand particles lose their rough edges and become smooth, reducing their ability to trap fine debris.

  • Water may begin channeling through the filter, bypassing proper filtration.

  • You'll notice cloudier water and the need to backwash more frequently.

🔧 Before You Begin

  • Most sand changes take 2–6 hours depending on the filter size and setup.

  • Having a second person is highly recommended.

  • Know your filter’s model number — parts are often model-specific.

  • If your filter is hard-plumbed (no unions), professional assistance is recommended since cutting and replumbing may be required.

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Shut Off Equipment

  • Turn off the pool pump.

  • Close all suction and return valves going to and from the pool.

Step 2: Release Pressure

  • Open the air relief valve on the top of the filter (if present) to relieve pressure.

Step 3: Drain the Filter

  • Locate the drain plug or cap at the bottom of the filter tank.

  • Remove it to drain the water from the tank completely.

Step 4: Disconnect Piping (Top-Mount Valves Only)

If your filter uses a top-mount multiport valve:

  • Disconnect the backwash hose from the waste port.

  • Locate and loosen the unions on the PVC pipes going to and from the valve — one from the pump (inlet) and one to the return line (outlet).

Skip this step if you have a side-mount valve.

No unions? If the pipes are glued directly into the valve, do not proceed unless you're comfortable replumbing. Contact Premier Pool & Spa for assistance.

Step 5: Remove the Multiport Valve (Top-Mount Only)

  • Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the clamp securing the multiport valve.

  • Carefully twist and lift the valve straight up and off the standpipe inside the filter.

Step 6: Remove the Old Sand

  • Use a shop vac or small scoop to remove the old sand.

  • Avoid damaging the standpipe and laterals at the bottom of the tank.

  • Once emptied, rinse out the tank with a garden hose.

Gravel Note: Some filters use pea gravel as a base layer. It can be reused if clean, but replacing it is recommended if you need to inspect or replace the laterals.

Step 7: Inspect the Laterals

  • Laterals are the small slotted “arms” attached to the bottom of the standpipe.

  • Check for cracks or breaks. Damaged laterals can lead to sand entering the pool.

  • Replace any damaged laterals before proceeding.

Step 8: Reposition the Standpipe and Protect It

  • Ensure the standpipe is centered upright in the tank.

  • Cover the top of the standpipe with duct tape or the black centering tool (if included) to prevent sand from entering.

  • For side-mount filters, ensure the internal pipe is also kept sand-free.

Step 9: Add Water, Gravel & Sand

  • Fill the tank about 1/3 to 1/2 full with water — this cushions the laterals and prevents damage while adding sand.

  • Add gravel first (if required), then the correct amount of filter-grade silica sand (usually #20 grade).

  • Use your owner's manual to confirm the correct type and amount of sand.

Be sure to remove any tape or tools blocking the standpipe before reassembly!

Step 10: Reassemble the Filter

  • For top-mount valves:

    • Slide the valve down over the standpipe.

    • Reattach and tighten the clamp.

    • Reconnect the unions for the inlet and outlet lines.

    • Reattach the backwash hose.

  • For side-mount valves:

    • Replace the cap or valve assembly at the top of the tank as directed.

Step 11: Backwash and Rinse

Before switching to normal filtration, backwash and rinse the new sand:

  1. Set the multiport valve to BACKWASH.

  2. Open all valves and turn the pump ON. Run for 2–5 minutes or until the sight glass (or hose) water is clear.

  3. Turn off the pump, set the valve to RINSE, and run for 30–60 seconds.

  4. Turn off the pump again and set the valve to FILTER.

📝 Final Notes

  • Monitor water clarity over the next few days — new sand can take a little time to fully settle.

  • Be sure to check for leaks around unions, fittings, and the clamp after startup.

  • Always use the correct sand type and quantity, we recommend Ruby Sand  to replace regular filter sand & Red Flint Gravel when gravel is needed.
