❄️ How to Winterize Your Above Ground Pool Filter & Pump
Protect Your Equipment and Prep for a Smooth Spring Start
When it's time to close your above ground pool for the season, one of the most important steps is properly winterizing and storing your pump and filter system. Done right, this will extend the life of your equipment and make spring opening a breeze.
💨 Winterizing Your Pool Pump
✅ 1. Drain and Disconnect
-
Remove all drain plugs from your pool pump, chlorinator (if installed), and any hoses connected to the system.
-
Be sure all water is fully drained to prevent freeze damage during winter.
🧺 2. Keep It Organized
-
Store all drain plugs, sight glasses, and small fittings in the pump basket to avoid losing them over winter.
-
Consider tagging or labeling items to make reassembly easier in spring.
🏠 3. Store Indoors (If Not Blowing Out Lines)
If you’re not blowing out your lines, it’s best to bring these components indoors:
-
Pump
-
Chlorinator
-
All hoses and connectors
Indoor storage helps protect from freezing, reduce UV degradation, and prolong equipment life.
🧼 Winterizing the Filter – By Filter Type
Sand Filters
-
Set the multiport valve to “Winterize”
-
Remove the drain plug at the bottom to drain fully
-
If applicable, also remove the sight glass and bleeder valve, storing them in your pump basket
-
You can leave the filter outside if fully drained, though indoor storage is ideal
🌿 Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filters
-
Fully drain the filter tank
-
Rinse off the grids or fingers to remove excess D.E. powder
-
Leave all valves open to ensure no water remains inside
-
Store removable parts indoors if possible
🧃 Cartridge Filters
-
Drain and rinse off the cartridge thoroughly
-
Store the cartridge indoors to prevent cracking or degradation from freezing temps
-
The filter tank can be left outside if fully drained
🌊 Winterizing Salt Water Pool Systems
If your pool uses a salt chlorine generator, additional care is needed.
⚙️ 1. Adjust the Settings
-
Set the generator to “Winter” mode if your model includes that option
🔌 2. Remove the Electrolytic Cell
-
If no winter setting exists, unscrew the end caps and remove the cell (or full unit)
-
Clean off any scale buildup before storing
📦 3. Store Indoors
-
Place the clean cell or full system in a dry, heated area until spring

🧰 Final Winter Storage Tips
-
Store all equipment in a dry, frost-free environment
-
Do not leave hoses or drain plugs lying around — bundle and label them for easy access later
-
If storing outside, ensure everything is fully drained, and cover or elevate off the ground
