  • For safety and to prevent using incorrect and dangerous mixing techniques or proportions, we recommend using BioGuard Cell Cleaner, available in store or on our website, rather than a mixture of Muriatic Acid and water.  If you prefer to use Acid, please check the manufacturer recommendations as opposed to these videos for mixture amounts and instructions.  We are unable to assist with those recommendations.

  • Leftover Cell Cleaner can be saved for the next use or added directly to the pool as it is a scale inhibitor.

🧼 How to Clean a Pool Salt Cell

Over time, calcium and mineral buildup can reduce your salt cell’s ability to generate chlorine. Cleaning it regularly helps extend its life and ensures your pool stays sanitized.

🛠 What You’ll Need:

  • Garden hose

  • Salt cell cleaning stand or cap (e.g. Zodiac R0523000 for Jandy cells)

  • Mild acid solution (4 parts water to 1 part muriatic acid)

  • Bucket or plastic container

  • Safety goggles and gloves

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Turn Off Power
Shut off the pool pump and disconnect the salt system from its power source.

  2. Remove the Salt Cell
Unscrew and carefully remove the cell from the plumbing line.

  3. Rinse Off Loose Debris
Use a garden hose to rinse off any visible debris or loose scale.

  4. Inspect for Scale Buildup
If you see white or chalky deposits between the plates, a chemical cleaning is needed.

  5. Attach Cleaning Cap or Stand
Place the cell vertically with the cleaning cap securely attached (or use a stand that holds it upright).

  6. Add Cleaning Solution
Pour the acid solution into the cell until the plates are submerged. Do not overfill. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes — bubbling is normal.

  7. Rinse Thoroughly
After cleaning, pour out the solution safely and rinse the cell thoroughly with fresh water.

  8. Reinstall and Restart System
Reattach the cell, restore power, and resume normal operation.

⚠️ Tips & Safety Notes:

  • Only clean the cell when necessary. Over-cleaning can shorten its lifespan.

  • Never pour water into acid. Always add acid to water when mixing.

  • Use protective gear and clean in a well-ventilated area.
