🧂 Arctic Spa's SpaBoy Salt Cell Life: How to Check It

🧂 SpaBoy Salt Cell Life: How to Check It (and what to ignore)
Know when your salt cell needs love—or replacement.

The Battery/Cell Health indicator in the MyArcticSpa app is intended to alert you if your salt level is low or if your SpaBoy salt cell is going bad. In theory, it’s helpful—but in practice? It’s often too inconsistent to rely on completely.

🔋 Our advice: Don’t stress the Battery/Cell Life indicator. Instead, follow these 4 steps to get a much more accurate picture of your SpaBoy salt cell’s condition:

✅ Step 1: Check Your Salt Level

Your salt level should be between ~2200–2500 ppm.

  • If it's too low, SpaBoy can’t generate chlorine effectively—add salt.

  • If it’s too high, it can potentially damage components—dilute by draining and refilling with fresh water.

📅 Step 2: Consider Cell Age

SpaBoy cells typically last 6–12 months, depending on:

  • Spa size

  • Usage frequency

  • Water balance consistency

💡 If your cell is outside this window, it may be time for:

  • A deep cleaning (remove and clean the cell with cell cleaner, can be done with water in spa)

  • Or a replacement cell

🔍 Step 3: Smoke Test

A quick at-home test you can do:

  1. Open the MyArcticSpa app

  2. Turn on Boost Mode

  3. Wait 1–2 minutes

  4. Look for "smoke" (tiny bubbles or mist rising from the cell)

💨 No smoke? It’s likely that your cell:

👨🔧 Step 4: Let Premier Pools Check Your Cell Remotely

Our employees can log into your spa through myarcticspa.com/dealers and check the SpaBoy Table under Diagnostics.

Here’s what we look at when SpaBoy is in "Charge CC" mode:

⚡ Voltage (V)

  • If V > 14,000, it means the system is maxed out trying to power a struggling cell.

  • Likely causes: Dirty or failing cell, clean or replace

🧲 Impedance (I)

  • ~2500 = System sending 100% voltage to add chlorine to increase low ORP

  • ~1250 = 50% voltage, spa is near ORP set point, just needs a bit more chlorine

  • ~625 = 25% voltage, spa is near to/at ORP set point, just maintaining chlorine

📊 Resistance: E1-N & E1-P

  • Pre-2020 spas: Normal range is 1000–6000 when in "Charge CC"

  • 2020+ spas: Normal range is 100–600 when in "Charge CC"

  • Above those numbers? Cell is likely scaling or failing.

  • If either value reads all 9’s, it means the niche & cell is bad (not just the cell).

🔧 Replacing the niche typically requires service from a trained technician. If you're mechanically skilled, it’s possible to attempt the swap—but proceed with caution. Replacing the cell is fairly easy to do and can be done with water in the spa.
