Polaris FREEDOM Plus (FRP550CTLR) at a glance

The FREEDOM Plus is Polaris's battery-powered robot for in-ground pools. There's no floating cable and no power supply on the deck: the cleaner runs off an onboard lithium-ion pack, recharges on an outdoor caddy, and can be steered or called to the surface with a handheld remote while it's still underwater.

  • Full cycle: floor, walls and waterline in about 2 hr 30 min per charge
  • Recharge: under 5 hours on the included caddy (contact plates, no plug to seat)
  • Control: LiFi handheld remote underwater, plus the iAquaLink app over Wi-Fi
  • Retrieval: remote-triggered Easy Lift, Tap & Lift with a pole, or the included hook
  • Pool size: in-ground pools up to 50 ft long
  • Warranty: 2-year limited (Polaris/Fluidra)

Our pairing pick: add a Betta SE Plus solar skimmer

Most of what ends up on your pool floor starts out floating: leaves, pollen, bugs and dust. The Betta SE Plus solar robotic skimmer patrols the surface all day on solar power and catches that debris before it sinks. With the surface handled, the FREEDOM Plus has less to pick up, its canister fills more slowly, and you won't need to run (or charge) it as often. Both units are cordless, so there's no cable for the robot to tangle with while they share the pool.

Charging & battery: what to expect

The most common surprise with any cordless robot: one charge = one cleaning cycle. It isn't charged once a week like a phone. Polaris's instructions are to take it out and recharge it after every cycle, and a full recharge takes up to 5 hours.

Situation What to plan for
Normal weekly upkeep One full cycle (about 2.5 hr), then back on the caddy. Run it as often as your pool needs: owners with heavy tree cover often run it daily, and most pools do well with a few cycles a week.
Spring opening / pool closed all winter This is not a one-charge job. A winter's worth of leaves and silt will fill the 4 L canister quickly, and a full canister makes the robot float, slip on walls, and stop picking up. Net out the big leaves first, get the water clear and above 55°F, then plan on several cycles over a few days, emptying the canister and recharging between each.
Fall leaf drop Use Floor only mode (about 1.5 hr) for quicker pickups, and empty the canister after every run.
Real-world run time Rated at about 2.5 hr on the full floor/wall/waterline cycle when new. Some owners report closer to 1.5–2 hr, depending on the mode, pool size and how dirty the pool is. Like any lithium-ion battery, run time slowly drops over the seasons.
Battery light orange when you go to use it A solid orange light means it may not finish a full cycle. Wait for green (blinking green = enough for a full cycle).
Not used for a week or more After 8 days off the caddy, the cleaner goes into deep sleep. Set it back on the plugged-in caddy to wake it and top it off.
End of a cycle In the last 10 minutes it climbs to the waterline and waits for you, and the app sends a notification. If nobody lifts it out, it settles back to the floor and you'll need the remote, Tap & Lift or the hook. Don't leave it in the pool between cycles.
Where to keep it On its caddy in the shade, plugged into a GFCI outlet. Polaris says never to store or dry it in direct sun. The battery is a sealed module, and heat is what shortens its life.
Winter storage Drain it, store it indoors at 80–100% charge (solid green), and either leave it on the plugged-in caddy or give it a full charge before the season starts.

Which cleaning cycle to use

Cycle Covers Approx. run time Started from
Floor + walls + waterline Entire pool 2 hr 30 min Cleaner or app
Floor only Pool floor 1 hr 30 min Cleaner or app
Waterline only Tile/scum line 45 min App only
SMART Cycle Entire pool Calculated by the app from your pool App only

Run times are from the Polaris owner's manual. A floor-only run is a good fit for a quick pickup after a storm; the full cycle is the weekly clean.

Getting it out of the pool

Lifting a wet robot is the part most owners dislike. The FREEDOM Plus gives you three ways around it:

  1. Easy Lift (remote): one button stops the cycle and sends the cleaner up the wall to the waterline, where it drains as you lift it.
  2. Tap & Lift (no remote needed): tap the cleaner with your pool pole and it climbs to the surface on its own. Handy if the remote's AA batteries are dead.
  3. Manual hook: included in the box as a backup.

The app can also send a push notification when a cycle ends so the cleaner isn't left sitting in the pool.

Minnesota owners: water and charging temperatures

Our season is short and cold at both ends, so these two numbers from the manual matter:

  • Operating water temperature: 55°F to 95°F. Early-May openings and late-September water can sit below 55°F; wait for the water to warm before running it.
  • Charging temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Bring the cleaner and caddy into a garage or basement on cold nights and for winter storage. Freeze damage is not covered by the warranty.

The caddy must plug straight into a GFCI outlet (no extension cords).

Common questions

Is FRP550CTLR the same cleaner as FFREEDOMP?
Yes. Polaris lists both model numbers with identical specifications; FRP550CTLR is the number used through pool dealers.

Will it work in an above-ground pool?
No. Polaris rates it for permanently installed in-ground pools only.

How often do I need to charge it?
After every cycle. It runs one full cycle (about 2.5 hr) per charge and recharges in under 5 hours, so it's ready for another run the same day. See "Charging & battery: what to expect" above.

Can it clean my pool right after opening in the spring?
Yes, but plan on several cycles over a few days, not one. Empty the canister and recharge between runs.

Can I schedule it to run automatically?
No. Cycles are started on demand from the cleaner or the iAquaLink app.

How does it compare to the corded Polaris robots?
See our robotic pool cleaner lineup, or stop in at our Chanhassen store and we'll walk you through the differences.
