Betta SE Plus at a glance

The Betta SE Plus is a solar-powered robotic skimmer. It floats on the surface of your pool all day and pulls in leaves, bugs, pollen and pet hair before they sink. A solar panel on top keeps the battery topped up while it works, and the Plus adds a plug-in adapter for cloudy stretches and cool weather. It has no cord and needs no hookup to your pump or skimmer.

  • Cleans: the water surface only (not the floor or walls)
  • Power: built-in battery, charged by the solar panel or the included AC adapter
  • Run time: up to 30+ hours on a full charge
  • Recharge: about 5–6 hours in direct sun, or about 3.5 hours on the adapter
  • Navigation: automatic, with ultrasonic sensors that steer around walls, ladders, steps and floaters
  • Shallow Water Safeguard: shallow-draft hull for steps, sun ledges and tight spots
  • Motors: twin salt- and chlorine-tolerant (SCT) motors
  • Basket: large 200-micron fine-mesh basket, lifts out from the top
  • Controls: wireless remote (Auto, Sleep and manual steering); no app
  • Pool size: in-ground and above-ground pools up to about 2,400 sq ft (40 × 60 ft)
  • Warranty: 1-year limited (Betta)

Pair it with a robotic pool cleaner

The Betta handles the surface. A robotic cleaner handles the floor and walls. Together they cover the whole pool, and because the Betta catches debris before it sinks, your robot has less to pick up and doesn't need to run as often. Popular pairings: the cordless Dolphin LIBERTY 300, the Dolphin S2000, the Polaris EPIC 8640, and for above-ground pools, the Polaris 7000.

Charging: what to expect

Most Betta questions we get are about charging. The short version: in a sunny Minnesota summer it charges itself while it skims and you rarely touch it. In spring, fall and long cloudy stretches, plan on using the adapter now and then.

Situation What to expect
Sunny summer days The panel charges it while it works, so it can skim day and night. Leave it in the pool in Auto mode.
A few cloudy or rainy days A full battery covers up to 30+ hours. It still charges a little under clouds, but not much in rain. Plug it into the adapter if the light starts flashing red.
Spring opening and fall (cool water and short days) Betta notes that solar charging drops off sharply once temperatures are below about 68°F, and the low sun angle doesn't help. Short run times this time of year are normal and don't mean the battery is failing. Charge it on the adapter, or take it out and prop the panel toward the sun at about a 45° angle with the switch on.
Heavy leaf drop The basket fills faster than the battery drains. Empty it every day or two when the leaves are coming down.
Light flashing red Low battery. It runs in short bursts while it looks for sun. Give it sun or the adapter.
All lights off The battery is fully drained. Charge it on the adapter (unit switched off).
Flashing red and green It's stuck or something is caught in a propeller or impeller. It retries every 20 minutes; check the basket, cover lock and propellers.
Using the adapter Turn the unit off first, then plug in. The charger light shows red while charging and green when full. Keep the charging-port cover closed in the pool.
Winter storage Take it out at closing, rinse it, let it dry completely and store it indoors at room temperature. Don't leave it outside over a Minnesota winter.

Remote modes

Mode What it does
Auto (default) Skims on its own and manages its own charging. Green light flashes.
Sleep Stops skimming but keeps seeking sun to charge, which is handy on cool or low-light days. Green light slowly fades in and out.
Remote control Steer it forward, back, left or right to grab a specific leaf patch. It goes back to Auto after 2 minutes without input, or when you hold Stop for 2 seconds.

What's in the box

  • Betta SE Plus solar skimmer with debris basket
  • Wireless remote
  • AC charging adapter

Care

  • Empty and rinse the basket every 2–4 days, more often during leaf drop. Lift the unit flat with both hands and switch it off before pulling the basket.
  • Hose off the solar panel and wipe it with a soft cloth to remove chemical film. Never pressure-wash or scrape it.
  • Check the propellers and impeller for hair or string now and then.
  • If it starts circling, clean the panel and clear the propellers.

Common questions

Does it replace my robotic pool cleaner?
No. It only skims the surface. It's a partner for a floor-and-wall robot, not a replacement.

Does it need to be plugged in?
No. It charges from the sun while it skims. The adapter is a backup for cloudy weather and cool spring and fall days.

Why does it run less in spring and fall?
Cooler temperatures and a lower sun cut solar charging. That's normal and doesn't mean the battery is going bad. Use the adapter or angle the panel toward the sun.

Can I leave it in the pool?
Yes, during the season. Take it out for winter and store it indoors.

Will it work in a salt pool?
Yes, up to 5,000 ppm salt. Its motors are built to tolerate salt and chlorine.

Will it work alongside a corded robot?
Yes. The simplest approach is to run the robot's cycle and then take the robot out, which Polaris and Maytronics recommend anyway. Betta notes that if a corded or hose-type cleaner stays in the pool, it may need an anti-tangle guard and hose weights.
