Raypak RP-180 Titanium Indirect Pool & Spa Heat Exchanger, 185,000 BTU
Model RP-180 | Order # 018306 | Item 018306, model B Ti-180 | Titanium | 185,000 BTU/hr nominal | Pool flow 20 to 50 GPM
The RP-180 is a compact shell-and-tube heat exchanger that heats a pool or spa with hot water from a boiler or other heat source, keeping the two water circuits apart. This is the titanium version, which Raypak offers for salt water and heavily chlorinated pools. It is the smallest size in the line, with a nominal capacity of 185,000 BTU per hour.
✅ Made for:
- Pools, spas and hot tubs heated from a boiler or other hot-water source. The exchanger does not make heat on its own.
- Salt water and high-chlorine pools: with the titanium exchanger Raypak allows up to 6,000 ppm salt and 3,000 ppm total dissolved solids.
- Systems that can hold 20 to 50 GPM on the pool side and 20 to 30 GPM on the heating side.
🔧 Details:
- Raypak item 018306. The brochure calls it model RP-180, the manual B Ti-180.
- Nominal capacity 185,000 BTU/hr, based on a 140 degrees F difference between the incoming heating water and the pool water.
- Material: titanium. Heat transfer area 4.7 sq ft.
- Pool connections 1-1/2 in. NPT. Boiler connections 1-1/4 in. NPT.
- Overall length 16-1/8 in. (409 mm). Shell diameter 4-1/16 in. (103 mm).
- Pool-side flow 20 to 50 GPM, with 1.5 to 9.5 ft of head loss. Heating-side flow 20 to 30 GPM, with 1.0 to 2.0 ft of head loss.
- Design rating for the titanium models: 150 PSI on both tube side and shell side, 406 degrees F.
- Not included: the operating thermostat, high limit and flow switch. Raypak requires all three and they are supplied separately.
- Raypak limited warranty: 1 year parts and labor when installed with a pool or spa by a licensed installer in the contiguous 48 states.
📌 Good to know:
- For best heat transfer Raypak calls for counter-flow piping: the heating water and the pool water pass through the exchanger in opposite directions.
- Raypak calls for a thermostat on the pool inlet set no higher than 104 degrees F, a second control that limits the outlet to 140 degrees F, and a flow switch in the pool line.
- Do not exceed the maximum flow rates. Where pool flow is higher or varies, Raypak shows a bypass line with a 2 lb spring check valve and a manual valve.
- Chemical feeders and salt chlorine generators go downstream of the exchanger with an anti-siphon valve. Free chlorine must not go above 5 ppm.
- System design and installation are for a qualified installer.
Gas, venting and electrical work must be done by a qualified installer and meet local codes.
